A Quiet Afternoon<\/a><\/em> together, protests began in the US, and here in Canada, calling out police action against BIPOC. And we (3 out of the 4 of us are white) looked at each other and wondered if we should delay the launch. We didn’t want to take space away from coverage on Twitter and we certainly didn’t want to suggest that now was the time to take a break from everything and read an escapism book.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSo we delayed our launch, and decided, at the same time, to give 50% of our profits to BLM, because as the Pillbug wrote: “quiet afternoons are so often a privilege when they should be a right”. We weren’t sure if we would even crack a profit, so just to cover our bases, we donated the rest of G&V’s anthology operating budget before we even launched. Then we crossed our fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We were lucky. We made a good book, we got good word-of-mouth, and we made back our costs in under a month<\/em>, hitting our target on July 30th. All of August was profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSo last week, I crunched various numbers like sunflower seeds, and extracted a very tidy sum of $331 CAD for donation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\tIt’s not enough. But it’s a start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
